Adelaide Beaches
The Adelaide Beaches are dynamic, always shifting in response to wind and
wave energy. Developments since the early 1900's have impacted on the
coastal zone and reduced the dune area necessary for beach protection. The
Adelaide beaches are now in need of continuing replenishment and maintenance
to prevent severe erosion of the Adelaide coastline.
From July 2006 to May 2007 the sand shifter equipment was trialled at
several locations to assist with sand bypassing around man made obstructions
and to recycle sand back to denuded areas of the beach. Approximately 43,000
tonnes of sand were pumped during this period.
The effectiveness of the trial and suitability for permanent installation
is currently being assessed.
